Indian Railways has declared the 69-km Kokrajhar–Gelephu rail line as a Special Railway Project (SRP), making it the first-ever rail link between India and Bhutan. Key Recent Developments
In March 2024, India and Bhutan finalized plans to build two key rail links – the 69-km Kokrajhar–Gelephu line and the 16-km Banarhat–Samtse line, which will connect West Bengal to Bhutan. These projects will give Bhutan its first-ever railway connectivity.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has already issued a Special Railway Project (SRP) notification under the Railways Act, 1989, and funds have been set aside for surveys and initial works.

Project Overview and Investment
The Kokrajhar–Gelephu rail line is estimated to cost around ₹3,500 crore. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has already completed the detailed project report along with the final location survey. The corridor will include six new stations – Balajan, Garubhasa, Runikhata, Shantipur, Dadgiri, and Gelephu.
To support the route, the project will feature two major viaducts, 29 large bridges, 65 smaller bridges, one road overbridge, and 39 road underbridges.

Construction and Design Details
The Kokrajhar–Gelephu rail project faces challenging terrain, requiring advanced engineering solutions. Two viaducts, each 11 metres long, will allow trains to safely cross difficult landscapes.
