Early Life
Baba Amte was born on 26 December 1914 in Hinganghat, Wardha district of Maharashtra. He came from a wealthy family, and his father was a British government officer. Despite his comfortable upbringing, young Amte was sensitive to the struggles of the poor and underprivileged. He studied law and began practicing as a successful lawyer. However, material success never satisfied him as much as working for the people.
Turning Point
The biggest turning point in Baba Amte’s life came when he encountered a man suffering from advanced leprosy. While most people stayed away due to fear and stigma, Baba Amte approached him with compassion and began treating him. This incident transformed his perspective and gave him the mission of serving leprosy patients and marginalized communities.
Social Work and Anandwan
In 1949, Baba Amte founded Anandwan (Forest of Joy) in Maharashtra. It became a home for leprosy patients, differently-abled individuals, and the poor. Instead of charity, he promoted dignity and self-reliance by engaging them in agriculture, handicrafts, and various industries.
