Gomti River Restoration Mission Launched

The Uttar Pradesh government launched the Gomti Rejuvenation Mission in October 2025 to bring the Gomti River back to life. The project focuses on restoring the river’s natural flow by stopping about 95% of urban sewage from entering it. Covering the stretch from Pilibhit to Ghazipur, the mission aims to revive the river’s ecosystem and enhance water quality across its course.

Vision and Key Objectives

The mission extends across the entire Gomti River basin with the main aim of keeping the river clean, continuous, and pollution-free. Authorities plan to stop almost all sewage from urban drains before it reaches the river. This step will help cut down pollution and stop untreated waste from flowing into the water.

Wastewater Treatment System

At present, six sewage treatment plants (STPs) along the river can treat a total of 605 million litres of wastewater per day. The mission aims to increase this capacity by building new STPs and upgrading the existing ones. More urban drains will be connected to these plants to ensure untreated sewage does not enter the river.

Methods to Keep the River Clean

The mission focuses on 39 main drains that flow into the Gomti River. Currently, 13 of these drains release untreated sewage, which will now be intercepted and treated. Authorities also plan to remove encroachments that have narrowed the river, helping restore its natural width and improving the flow of water.

Green and River Enhancement Initiatives

New wetlands, including Ekana Wetland and Sajan Lake in Lucknow, will be developed to boost biodiversity and help retain water. The mission will also focus on clearing encroachments, beautifying river ghats, and increasing greenery along the riverbanks. These initiatives aim to restore the ecosystem and make the river more attractive and vibrant.

Leadership and Tracking Systems

The Gomti Task Force, set up under the National Mission for Clean Ganga, manages the project. It includes experts and officials from different state departments. Progress will be tracked through monthly reviews and quarterly reports to ensure accountability, with the Chief Minister’s Office keeping a close watch on the implementation.

Budget and Equipment Planning

The government has ensured sufficient funding for the mission. Key equipment, including track boats, floating barriers, and excavators, will be made available promptly. This will help carry out cleaning and restoration work along the river efficiently.

Community Engagement and Awareness

The mission emphasizes active participation from local communities and citizens. Awareness campaigns will educate residents about the importance of a clean river, proper waste disposal, and water conservation.

As part of the mission, sustainable urban planning measures will be implemented to reduce pollution at its source. Rainwater harvesting, green buffers along the river, and proper sewage networks will complement existing treatment infrastructure.

Urban development projects will follow strict environmental guidelines to prevent encroachments and runoff. These measures are designed to maintain the river’s ecological balance while supporting the city’s growth in a sustainable and responsible manner.

Monitoring and Technology Integration

Advanced technologies will be used to monitor water quality and track pollution levels in real time. Sensors, GIS mapping, and automated reporting systems will help authorities detect contamination and take immediate corrective action.

Data-driven decision-making will ensure the mission’s strategies remain effective. By integrating technology with field operations, the government aims to maintain transparency, improve efficiency, and achieve long-term sustainability in the Gomti River restoration efforts.
