She earned a Masterโ€™s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas, Arlington, and later completed and earned her Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Journey to NASA

After her studies, Kalpana joined NASAโ€™s Ames Research Center as a researcher, where she worked on fluid dynamics and aircraft design. Her brilliance, dedication, and passion soon earned her a spot in the NASA Astronaut Corps in 1994.

In 1997, Kalpana Chawla made history by flying on the Space Shuttle Columbia STS-87 mission, becoming the first Indian-born woman in space. She worked as a mission specialist and robotic arm operator.
