She completed her early education in Karnal and went on to study Aeronautical Engineering at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. With a strong desire to reach greater heights, Kalpana moved to the United States in the 1980s. She earned a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas, Arlington, and later completed and earned her Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Journey to NASA
After her studies, Kalpana joined NASA’s Ames Research Center as a researcher, where she worked on fluid dynamics and aircraft design. Her brilliance, dedication, and passion soon earned her a spot in the NASA Astronaut Corps in 1994.
In 1997, Kalpana Chawla made history by flying on the Space Shuttle Columbia STS-87 mission, becoming the first Indian-born woman in space. She worked as a mission specialist and robotic arm operator.
