India Launches First Electric Heavy Truck Fleet for Green Transport, Full details 2025
India Launches First Electric Heavy Truck Fleet at JNPA, marking a major step in sustainable port operations, green energy adoption, and reduced carbon emissions.
India Launches First Electric Heavy Truck Fleet
India has made a big move towards green logistics by launching its first fleet of electric heavy trucks at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off the initiative, which aims to make port operations more eco-friendly.
The fleet now has 50 electric trucks with swappable batteries and is planned to grow to 80 trucks by the end of 2025. This step is part of India’s larger mission to cut carbon emissions in the logistics sector and promote clean energy.

JNPA Launches First Fleet of Electric Heavy Trucks
JNPA rolled out India’s first electric heavy truck fleet for port logistics, featuring swappable batteries for faster operations. Starting with 50 trucks and expanding to 80 this year, it becomes the largest electric truck fleet at any Indian port.
Infrastructure at JNPA
A special heavy-duty battery swapping station has been set up for the new fleet. It enables fast battery replacements, cutting down vehicle downtime. This facility is essential for smooth operations and shows that electric heavy vehicles can work effectively in port logistics.
Aiming High: Electric Vehicle Targets
JNPA plans to electrify 90% of its nearly 600 heavy trucks by December 2026. This ambitious goal highlights their commitment to sustainability and cutting carbon emissions, in line with India’s national clean energy and environmental objectives.
Expanding Decarbonisation Initiatives at India’s Ports
Indian ports are increasingly investing in renewable energy like solar and wind power. They are also building infrastructure for LNG and hydrogen fuels, while electrifying cargo-handling equipment. Together, these initiatives help lower the carbon footprint of port operations.
