Earthquake Zones in Bihar

BSDMA’s earthquake damage scenario lists districts including East Champaran, West Champaran, Sheohar, Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Samastipur, Begusarai, Khagaria, Purnia, Katihar, Bhojpur, Patna, Jehanabad, Nalanda, Nawada, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Jamui, Munger, Bhagalpur and Banka in Zone IV.

Some districts may extend across more than one seismic zone, so earthquake vulnerability should be assessed using the applicable seismic maps and local disaster-management plans rather than assuming that an entire district has identical risk.

Seismic Zone III

Parts of southwestern Bihar are classified in Seismic Zone III. This category represents a lower seismic hazard than Zones IV and V, but it does not mean that earthquakes cannot occur or cause damage. Proper construction, preparedness and public awareness remain important throughout the state.
